P1 Wimax Vs Streamyx

Alright, so I've been testing this WiMAX so called "The solution to Streamyx" for about 7 days. Here is a short review about it. Basically, all you need to know is that WiMAX uses wireless technology where else Streamyx uses wired based technology. Common sense will tell us that Wired Technology is faster than Wireless, and that is true. Streamyx uses copper wire cables to connect to their ISP, where else WiMAX uses wireless (radio waves technology) to connect to their ISP. To know more about P1, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packet_One_Networks.

P1 WiMAX

Advantages:
  • Easy installation. There is no need for a router. Just plug in the WiMAX dongle and connect!
  • Fast video streaming (2x faster than Streamyx). You'll love this thing if you're a fan of YouTube.
  • Fast download speed. I managed to reach 130Kbps ++ while downloading my anime. We're talking about wireless here! Not your LAN cable.
  • Weather likewise, it is not as vulnerable as Streamyx. Even when there's strong winds and heavy rains, WiMAX connection remains stable. It works for my case. Other reviews says it is affected by weather. Weird eh?

Disadvantages:
  • Your download speed/bandwidth is reduced by HALF(1/2) upon reaching 20GB if you take the PLUS package. WTF? You're paying RM99 (RM11 increase) compared to the normal 1Mbps of Streamyx. When I was been approach by a P1 promoter, he told me that this 20Gbps is just nothing. "You'll get unlimited bandwidth". So how do I know about the truth? The officer that works in P1 WiMAX admitted it, and it is their company's policy. 1/2 is way too much! Besides, I do know that our current Streamyx doesn't even gives us 1Mbps when we are paying RM88 for it. Oh well, I rather stick back to my old Streamyx than signing up a new contract for P1. Why pay extra when you're given the same speed as Streamyx? :)

  • Downloads and Browsing do not stack. So, if you're downloading a 500MB file, don't think that you're browsing speed remains fast. It'll be reduced.
  • Online gaming. I do not encourage online gamers to take up P1 if you're playing excessive online games like CS. I have tested it with XileRO, and it seems pretty ok. I'm assuming that it'll go freaking lag once it reaches the fair threshold.
  • Your connectivity to P1 depends on how close you are to the station/access point. If you're too far from its coverage area, don't bother subscribing it. Wireless itself is prone to interference. So, what happens when you're far from its coverage area? P1 = Coverage Area - Distance - Interference - Noise = 20%/30% signal? Think about it.

Conclusion:

P1 beats Streamyx in almost every aspect. It's browsing speed, video streaming, download speed beats Streamyx about 2x. Test P1 for 7 days, and decide whether you're happy with it or not. I decided to remain with Streamyx unless P1 changes its company policies. When you say Unlimited Bandwidth, give us Unlimited Bandwidth. I'll subscribe to P1 immediately! Hahaha.

For normal users:
I'll encourage you to take up P1 since you won't be downloading as much as 20GB per month. I'll be comparing it with the PLUS package since most of us are using the normal 1Mbps Streamyx package. Do take up P1 if you're a normal user!

For Anime lovers and gamers:
Guys, 20GB is too little. Anime file - 170MB ++. So, what if you're downloading Bleach + One Piece + Naruto + FMA = 800MB (1 week). Not include your browsing downloads, YouTube and other misc downloads! Even worst, if you're both Gamer and Anime lover lolz! I'll leave the calculation to you. Anime Lovers & Gamers = Remain with Streamyx until P1 gives us a better package + change in company's policy.

I can't wait for the days when they start charging people by usage. Those LYN people who think that contents are free, complain that streamyx sucks while their 1TB harddisk is full with downloaded animes, they should definitely be made to pay more on the usage compared to business or regular users of internet. Treat internet like electricity is the way for the future equals less spam, less bandwidth wastage, less energy expenditure.

p1 wimax is better lol. mostly, the internet line from any telekom csntre starts with fibre optics connections and branched to copper cables at urban areas. even imagined the old copper cables do provide static noises also affects your internet speed.

very good list of prons and cons, pre-use will get a lot info. I am not yet the P1 customer yet. Probably soon when my area stable and have coverage

arekey said...

HAHAHA the writer also does't realize that streamyx also has a bandwidth limit. It's didn't notice because streamyx is sloww all the time

Victor said...

Hey, not every streamyx are slow.. My 4mb/s will beat WIMAX in every aspect. Using the WIMAX need to adjust it, and even sometimes it shows full signal bar but i still can't get connected..

I'm a Wiggy user too, one good thing is it's mobility. IMHO, it's not that stable yet.

I am a P1 user for 10months, what i dunt like is their customer service, they dont seems to solve your issue and they are not allow to transfer their call to their superior no matter how.I can said i would have terminate the line if base on their customer service, but lucky they still give me good connection as in download for p2p.

The current situation about our internet connection in Malaysia leaves a lot to be desired. Most, if not all of our currently available internet provider is still playing catching up with other internet service providers in other countries. Take for example our nearest neighbour, Singapore. Very soon, a few areas in Singapore will be enjoying 1 Gbps internet connection! Yes you read it right. 1 Gbps! In Australia, Aussies enjoy on average 10 Mbps connections. Here in Malaysia, we have to put up the internet connection on "best effort basis". What a load of crap, actually.

Some people will say that we cannot compare Singapore and Malaysia as Singapore is a small island state and hence the better quality of internet service. Hey, why can't we do likewise for major towns for a start then? We can start with Klang Valley, Penang, Ipoh, Melaka, JB and Kuantan.

for me...i would say no harm to try to new things. never try never know whether your area is in good coverage or not. im had tried to use it, i can say it beats streamyx. hope the P1 would adjust the FairUsage Policy. this might help all of us a lot! and for streamyx fair usage policy, i think that is unfair, it never stated how much it will reduce. It just mention will reduce your speed limit once they found out your are heavy user. Unclear policy, unfair to consumers like us! Think twice before you subscribe for streamyx (http://www.streamyx.com.my/customer_care/customer_care.php?id=customer_care_fair_usage_policy)

i've been using P1 for 3 months ++.I play a few online games which r FIFA Online 2, Dekaron Extreme, Dekaron, and 2 moons...FIFA Online 2 gave me the best performance consistently but the other 3 games (actually quite the same but different servers) gave unstable performance and always got me disconnected. Fyi, the 3 games are from the server overseas and the closest one is from Philippines.

I fully agree with dchin.
not a single broadband ISP can provide a decent trouble free broadband service to home users. Our ISP would want to compare with other countries maybe like Burma. Also slowmyx never say "HIGH SPEED" broadband, only mention broadband !Meantime all home users are not getting what we pay for regardless of which ISP

haha..wimax took your comments and published it in their newsletter, what interesting was that they only took the good things you said about them and rule out the disadvantages or the bad things.

I feel it is a torture using P1 in my area. The customer service have no clue, and inconsistent with their advise, very unprofessional. One of the tech from the CS called my on his private line on sunday morning, saying that the team have no clue as to how to solve my problem and is stalling my time.... How the hell i response to words like this? I m paying $99 a month for crap and torture. I am strongly considering terminate my service as the cs said that i can do it without getting penalty. Then i was thinking going back to streamyx is just another torture.... guys anyone know any other isp out there that i could go for getting a stable connection??

To arekey, plz read the whole damn thing again before posting any comments! Alright, here are the few things tht I would like to clarify:

1) P1 WiMAX is better than Streamyx. No doubt about it. But, when you reached the bandwidth limit, you're speed is cut by half. That's around 500-600Kbps. It's worst than Streamyx. For Streamyx, upon reaching its bandwidth limit, you'll get around 700Kbps. Sign a contract with WiMAX and test it out. Then, post here haha!

2)The speed of Streamyx varies from one location to another. Why? Mainly because the people using the Internet in every area is different. Example, If you're in USJ 3/4 area, you're speed is definitely slower compared to USJ 3/2. Tested it with a few of my buddies.

3) For online gamers:
You might wanna test it with Counter Strike or any other Steam servers. Do test with other sensitive ping games.

4) Well, if you wanna have the BEST internet connection, you may wanna shift to Putrajaya because they're connection cables are made of Fiber Optics (The best medium for transmitting signals).

U din look through the terms and condition, b4 i'm consider to take P1, i took a look into their terms and condition, and the terms and condition did said that there is limited usage and so is not UNLIMITED and as you can c, my RM88 streamyx package download speed can do faster than tat, although 130k per sec is quite fast for wireless and weather doesnt affect my connection speed or anything... I thought P1 will be much more faster then Streamyx like around 200kb/sec or more??? Since downloading speed, coverage, weather and unlimited usage I would like 2 said tat Streamyx still owned... 20GB, i thought less than tat... anyway nvm... 170MB.. zzz... I usually download anime with FullHD, and it cause around 300MB-500MB and some BDRIP cause 1GB each episode...

Victor said...

Signed up for 10mb/s wiggy, but get only less than 2mbs speed. So i think my streamyx still beat Wiggy in speed and stability or almost every terms.. My 4.0mbs streamyx can get around 3.7mbs speed, which is over 80% of 4mbs.. With streamyx, i can get torrent speed around 200 ~ 300 kbs.. Direct download i can get 400+kb/s of download speed.. Playing CS online like getting less than 2ms ping time or almost 0ms.. Hosting in garena and everyone loves to join my room..

Wiggy? 10mbs, but give us only 2mbs below..
Good in one point, mobility; i can bring it to my anywhere which is covered by P1. But i'm just dissatisfied with the stability & speed.. Oh yah, the speed has no difference since 10mbs are like 2mbs, it made the Wiggy OVERPRICE WITH SLOW SPEED. IMO, i better terminate it and downgrade to a CHEAPER package. One word to P1, don't promote 10mbs , when u can't even provide us at least 50% of 10mbs speed..

FYI, i only use P1 when i'm outstation or travelling.

P1 Sucks, Cable Rules...Check your facts back....I have been using Streamyx for almost 6 years and service is improving...

@teresa
It is your fault for not reading the pamphlet properly. The fair usage threshold is stated so clearly. Besides, it's your fault for not checking the coverage area that you are going to be shifting.

@Rage
For Home Plus plan, you get 20GB usage threshold.

But getting FullHD video seems to be overkill of bandwidth because for me, I would love to watch anime fast. What's the point of downloading a FullHD video where what you see is just more pixels but the same storyline?

@Victor
You are another customer who complained about the speed of Wiggy. The stated speed is "Up to 10mbps" where the important point here is "UP TO". Besides, they did state that "Average download speed of 1mbps to 3mbps, or higher." So, you should be happy for what you are getting.

If you are going to say that the package is overpriced, why not you look at other wireless broadband?

Let's look at Digi Broadband. Let's say you take the EXPLORE package. You are only getting 700kbits/s download at the price of RM108, but for every additional usage after 10GB, you'll be charged RM 0.05 / 10MB.

When you said Streamyx beats P1 Wimax in terms of stability, you are comparing with two different mediums. To the fact that Streamyx is wired broadband and P1 Wimax is wireless broadband, I believe that there's no way a wireless broadband would be more stable than wired. Blame it on the lack of competition between ISP. Let's see, who is able to provide wired broadband aside from Streamyx?

You may say that there are Fibre Optics Network, MetroFON and PenangFON. But bear in mind that those ISP only provide internet to certain condominiums around Klang Valley and Penang. Now, tell me, what choices do we have? The only way an ISP can do is to use wireless because TM own the whole landline backbone of Malaysia.

I hope you understand the situation before complaining.

@Anonymous
That's indeed true that cable rules but for me, P1 is still the best at my area.

If you say Streamyx is good, let's search google for screamyx and you'll get millions of dissatisfied users.

HeHeHunter

tapi satu yang tak best... bukan seluruh shah alam ada p1 w1max... hanya kawan yang tertentu aje...

But... p1w1max still for me is no 1

yeah, u r true, I can said tat Malaysian doesnt care anything, juz can watch then settle, i like 2 watch full hd, because as u can c, is not improving in more pixel, the quality is very very obvious that is much more better then the normal from wat u stream from utube or tvrip, besides that I can use my larger lcd to view the video and a very cool SOUND!!! Is like an home theater, although is the same storyline, but in effect is WAY TOO DIFFERENT... anyway out of topic... sry~~ anyway for every, juz use anything u like... depends on u...

Thinking of Streamyx, but i need internet which has high mobility since i wont be in a fix place 24/7.

Still waiting more comments on P1,
and hope P1 will increase their coverage area fast and keep their speed at the same time.

Wow has this guide been written by a 12 yrs old? I wonder on what you base to give those advice.

1. How can Wimax be worst than copper wire? That technology has been designed to specifically remove the need of wires!

2. I top 260kb/s when downloading. Did you set up your modem correctly? You should check the coverage map, it will tell you where to point your modem.

3. You complain about the only 20GB bandwidth allowance, did you now Streamyx do that as well to very specific connections? I'd rather have a specific limit for downloading my videos at high speed than unlimited usage with unspecified speed.

4. You do not encourage online gaming? Wake up! the upstream is 500kbps! And they do a great job at keeping their quality of service. I play an average 5 hrs of World of Warcraft everyday with a latency not exceed 300ms. Hey not bad for an asian connected to a US server! There's no lag even if there are over 100 players connected to it. Compared to streamyx you will be lagging as heck if there's over 20 players.

5. Yes all radio signals are prone to interference that's why people invented noise reduction/ cancellation technology! Besides, you aren't going to be stupid enough to put your modem underneath your bed...

6. Are you such a pirate that you are going to be downloading everything that you come across? Be realistic, people do go to movies, people do buy music CDs and DVDs, people do play games on other consoles or simply need to go work. All these time contribute to the idling time of your connection.

Please stop spreading fears. For sure you will exceed your allocated bandwidth but 20GB is well enough for casual users to hardcore gamers. If you keep downloading 20GB every month, I would imagine you would be adding a new hard disk to your computer every 8 months or so.

I have been using P1 for a while now, its way better than Maxis and Streamyx. Recommended to everyone who seeks quality browsing.

Hey i need some suggestions here:

-I have stopped my streamyx connection and have been using P1 Wimax for 8 months plus with "Plus" package.

-Pros about P1:
1)Easy connection
2)Quite stable

-Cons about P1:
1)'Plus' usage 20G not enough
2)When usage is finished speed is reallllllly slooooowww.

-Currently, i heard about Streamyx Wireless and have some inquiries.

1)Do Streamyx Wireless need a 'phone line/fixed line' connected to the modem?

2)Will Streamyx Wireless be unstable in Subang Jaya, USJ?

***3)I'm planning to change to Streamyx Wireless 4mbps package for RM160 any suggestions? Or should i upgrade to P1 Wimax 'Pro' 2.4mbps for RM199?

Some suggestions pleassse.

all the internet server got pro and contra, for all info:P1 is the faster that other server.the new tech is just adopted with in our culture. While streamyx are already stable in this country, plus it provided by semi gov com.
Why P1 got the bandwidth limit.that is the term and condition that our Gov for those company want to provide internet service, that call fair usage threshold.so it will be fair to all user.In this live we should be fair to each other, dint be selfish.

p1 Wimax is good in certain area...for me, it is quite good for you tube...(it was fast, u dont really have to wait.)i'm in johor bahru.

But last time, i was staying at Batu Pahat and the SCREAMYX really OMG...eventhou it using wire but it still affected by the weather... once raining sure keep disconnect...

P1 is more depend on distance to the signal

hello guys..I'm currently working with TM. I don't argue that some of you are having problems with our services. The truth is, TM are doing the best they can at the moment to improve our networks. For latest update, we will launch our new product called HSBB somewhere in March 2010. And the minimum speed is 10Mb/s which is much much faster than P1. This service is currently on trial at the moment and being commented by TM staffs. I don't know whether HSBB is better than P1 or not but my suggestion is that maybe all of you who are thinking into subsribing P1 and to wait for HSBB to make your own comparison and jugdements. I'm not favouring to anyone just I know what it felt being cheated..

wimax sucks,

1 month they take time to solve base tower problem... puck off.

after 20GB usage, the connection is sucks. when u chatting at Yahoo Massenger, after 1 minute u send massage , ur fren will receive it. then he u get ur friend reply after 2 minute.
puck of wimax, i will potong wimax also.

i will go to streamyx, more stable.

Good topic.
I was a loyal streamyx user but late last year the line leaves much to be desired. I complained but was told their line behind my house shows good reading so they suspect my internal house wiring must be faulty and this is not covered under the contract. So I thought the way to resolve this internal wiring problem would be to be P1. I terminated streamyx in December and took the home package and can easily get 1.2kbps my best being 1.4kbps. However, since late last month the line has been so unstable many times red-yellow diode now everyday red diode shows. I already made my official complaint and am waiting for a technican to come over to make his opinion. Their station is only 5mins walk away from my house in a S.E. direction. If at the end of the day, I can hardly get to use the internet, better streamyx than nothing at all. I make my final decision next week.

safwan said...

i thought about changing streamyx to wimax, but funny thing is my coverage are just 2 houses away, thought about unlucky spot:/

and after hearing the max cap usage are 1/2 of what p1 offer, yea i would probably stay with streamyx back.

just other day i download more than 1 GB,and i say this is just 1 day,i could download 2 GB if i really want

just to say 20 GB not enough.

Dear all, it will be appreciated, if you all could state your location as well in the comment. Then it will be a better guideline for others between Streamyx and Wimax.

As I'm currently located in JB area(Bukit Indah). I've been considering on P1, but there are mixed bag of comments about it, then i realize it's really hard to make judgement as most of them lived in various place.

Put aside, as ppl comparing on the pricing, many opt to ignore the phone bill charges that tie to the streamyx service.

But, most service providers' Customer Service need to be improved more.

Sorry that i wasn't contribute any good comment here towards the comparison. Happy browsing.

Hmm..I've been using P1 for almost 2 months and it sucks. The reseller told me the signal tower was only a few houses away but the signal transmit slower than a moving snail. They also said if i want to terminate in less than a year or before contract expire,i have to pay 150.Whattaheck.Hopefully end of this year HSBB will start coming in since lotsa good remarks on it.For those who have used streamyx, keep on using.Don't 'Potong' as it will 'Potong' your excitement.

All ISP has the same problem! Certain user have problem with certain ISP.

Maxis 3G - not bad so far.
Streamyx - Stable so far (down a bit from time to time but not too serious).
Digi - ok
Celcom - sucks.

I used P1 more than 2 years.

Don use P1...... one movie file about 700MB take 3 days to download. If you like to download movies please take my advice.....
and some more 5GB, can only download 2 movies (700MB +700MB).

Just stick to Streamyx. Although Streamyx didn't give the service, but still compare to the others wireless network, Streamyx still better, but if u nid 2 take around then there is no choice and u hav to choose either P1, Celcom, Yes, Digi or Maxis.

I have been using P1 for almost a year. My experience is that it is very disappointing. I took the 2 Mbps line with 15G limit, but what I am getting now is just 0.3 Mbps download speed during weekends. I am sure Streamyx is better in terms of speed and value.
When I made the complaint, P1 service team said it is normal because more users are using it during weekends. What an excuse! Hahaha! Why can't P1 increase the bandwidth instead of keep selling without taking care of the capacity.
